I’m all out of grandmas nowadays, but I still have roses. Grandma Virginia explained that buds, mid-bloom and blow away roses were like young, middle age and older women. Young women were buds – most desirable, but no scent. Mid-bloom has more scent and art in her petals. And yet, roses near the end are fullest in their beauty and perfume – even if florists won’t sell them. Later, after I’d applied her cherry red nail polish, Grandma Virginia saw me walk away, slouching as usual. She called out, casual as sunlight, “If you walk like you’re beautiful people will believe it”.
